5 Signs You Need a Bike Fit
Share
Cycling should feel comfortable and efficient. You shouldn't feel like you're fighting the bike. If your bike is not set up correctly for you, you may experience discomfort, pain or feel inefficient and that your bike is holding you back.
A professional bike fit can help correct these issues and improve both performance and comfort.
Here are a few common signs that it might be time to get a bike fit.
Knee Pain Whilst Riding
Knee pain is one of the most common pains a cyclist experiences. This is often caused by an incorrect saddle height or poorly positioned cleats and lack of support for the foot.
When these aren't set up correctly your knees may track incorrectly through the pedal stroke, putting unnecessary stress on parts of your joint.
Having your cleats setup properly giving you the necessary support and correct cleat position is key to a comfortable and efficient cycling experience. Without proper support you will lack proprioception in your feet which is critical for maintaining a smooth, efficient and pain free pedal stroke.
Numb Hands or Tingling Fingers
If you regularly experience numb hands or tingling fingers on rides, it may be a sign that too much weight is being placed on your hands.
The most common cause for this is an excessive reach to the handlebars or a position that pitches you too far into the front of the bike resulting in a lot of weight being placed on your hands. This can also be caused by a handlebar that is too high
While it seems counterintuitive as a higher handlebar is generally considered more comfortable insufficient drop can cause the rider to sit more upright, placing more weight on the seat and making it harder for the rider's core muscles to support the upper body, leading to a "slouched" position where the weight pushes forward onto the hands.
Saddle Discomfort
Whilst many riders assume having saddle sores or pain simply means they need a different saddle, the real cause is often an incorrect fit or position, not necessarily the saddle.
There are many factors that come in to play that effect saddle comfort such as saddle height, tilt and fore aft adjustment, along with proper cleat setup. There are many different options when it comes to saddle choice and whilst it is personal and not every saddle will work for every rider a bike fit allows you to have the optimal position to allow you best decide on the ideal saddle for your position. Without a good fit you could try hundreds of saddles and never find one that works for you.
Lower Back or Neck Pain
Cycling naturally places your body in a forward-leaning posture, but if your fit doesn't mach your level of mobility, strength or morphology this position can place excessive strain on your spin and neck muscles.
There are several factors that can contribute to this discomfort:
- Handlebars position too low forcing your back into an overly aggressive position
- Excessive reach to the handlebars causing you to overstretch through the shoulders and neck
- Saddle position that causes you to shift forwards on the saddle, increasing the weight on your arms and upper body
- Poor core support, meaning your lower back muscles have to work harder to stabilise you
Many cyclists are surprised by how a few small adjustments can significantly improve their comfort and reduce fatigue allowing them to do longer or faster rides.
Feeling Inefficient On the Bike
Cycling performance depends heavily on how effectively your body can transfer energy through the pedals. When your bike isn't set up correctly, your muscles may not be working in their optimal range of motion.
These issues can cause riders to feel like they're pedalling without generating power, especially on climbs or sustained hard efforts.
Some signs your position may be limiting efficiency are:
- Legs feeling uneven or unbalanced during the pedal stroke
- Struggling to maintain a consistent cadence
- Difficulty maintaining power for sustained efforts without developing pain
Signs your position is efficient:
- Reduced heart rate for the same effort or increased power for the same heart rate
- Improved endurance on long rides
- Being able to comfortably hold the same position when completing a sustained effort.
A bike that fits you properly can transform your riding experience, helping you to ride longer, faster and more comfortably.
